By "The Google Tax" I really mean paying the artificially high minimum bids that Google has slapped you with.
There are different factors that determine the minimum bid.
But let me focus on a key "gotcha" that is responsible for a lot of it: Landing page
The biggest cause of the really high bids is a mismatch between keyword and landing page.
Here are some good rules of thumb, regarding if landing page is the culprit: If you have a minimum bid of $5 or more then your landing page is definitely the main problem If you have a minimum bid of $1 or more then your landing page is probably the main problem
Find how you can change your landing page to drastically lower those bids
What about if you have a minimum bid of of .25 to .50? You can definitely do something to lower that. But it's uncertain if it's landing page, other factors, or a combination.
I don't know what's worse, paying the "Google tax" and giving Google a lot more money than you should ... or leaving a keyword inactive (because it's not worth paying the high minimum) and losing out on traffic and sales you should be getting.
Either way it's murder to your business, from an Adwords perspective.
