Warning on phrase and broad match keywords:
I recommend using phrase and broad match keywords. But you do have to be careful. You may be including a lot of searches (and paying for visitors) that are poor matches for what you're offering. You can predict some of those, and exclude them via negative keywords.
But be be careful of bidding high on phrase and broad keywords that you aren't familiar with. Especially if you have a high daily budget. Keep a close eye on those, after you add them - to make sure you don't have a "wildfire" keyword that burns a lot of your money!
About Misspellings:
So come up with some variations that seem viable. And don't overanalyze them.
For example, when I first started advertising iPods, I was striving to come up with off-the-beaten-path keywords, since the obvious ones were very competitive (and hard to be profitable on).
Out of nowhere I thought of "idop" instead of "ipod". It seemed stupid. And I thought "how many bad spellers will convert?". But I forced myself to put it in my main iPod adgroup.
It turned out to be an awesome keyword that made a lot of money for me. Especially since most competition wasn't using it, and Google wasn't automatically broad-matching it for "ipod".
Merging and Un-merging words:
This could also fall under "silly keyword tricks that I use to make free money"!
The point is that for a lot of words and phrases, there are different ways to compact or extract them.
In the Sopranos example I had "HBO". But I should also have "Home box office". Maybe most people don't type that, but some do.
And I'm always surprised at how often people leave out spaces. It can be because they just want to quickly type, they forget the space, or they're in URL mode, where you don't put spaces in (a lot of people make great money from people typing in random words together as a URL)
So with the sopranos I don't bother with "the sopranos" as a keyword, since Google tosses out the "the". But "thesopranos" is a different thing ? and it's something that gets typed (though not a lot).
